Stage North Theater and Bar
A beautiful new theater with a lake-view bar. Very good live theater, movies, and concerts. Also free evenings of jazz, or open mike. Serves pizza before performances and popcorn with movies. Admission is an incredibly low $15.
Great Lakes Visitor's Center
This modern architectural treasure is just 6 miles south of Washburn, on Hwy. 13. Free Admission. Nature exhibits and documentary films, historical displays and photos, bog walks, and nature trails. Borrow some snowshoes or binoculars from the center to enhance your vist. Visit the center's tower to view hawks and eagles during spring and fall migrations. The annual May Nature and Birding Festival takes place here. Must purchase ticket.
Apostle Islands National Park
Located in Bayfield. Rated one of the top pristine National Parks. Boat tours and kayak rentals and tours.
Nature Trails
Coastal Walking Trail
Secluded and undeveloped, this crown jewel of a nature
trail is rich with wildflowers, willows, aspens, & dogwoods. It winds two easy-walking miles along
Lake Superior with panoramic views of the lake. Fox, mink, deer, eagles, neotropical birds, and an occasional homo sapien are among the fauna seen along the trail.
Several secluded coves with sandy beaches lie just off the trail, perfect for swimming or kayaking.
School Forest Trail
Just beyond the cemetary at the top of 8th Ave. hill lies the School Forest Trail. It meaders a mile and a half through aspen, maple, pine, hemlock, and balsam trees. It is an easy flat walk with planking over the ephemeral wetland areas. Picnic at the catherdral of hemlocks and pine - benchs provided. Usually accessible for winter hikes without snowshoes. Splendid spring and fall colors.
